Details

The IE Social Awareness Week is a 3-days event dedicated to providing events that raise social awareness and responsibility for the IE community, mainly on online platforms due to the circumstances. It will take place from the 5th to the 7th of October 2020.
The week will be built around various events which will be organized by IE clubs as well as different schools and departments within the university. Events will consist of workshops and guest speakers events which discuss and debate issues within the topics listed below.
The goal of Awareness Week itself is to get IE students talking about these topics, put them on the table; while our long term goal is to create a safe space where students can feel comfortable talking about these topics and guide them towards higher levels of acceptance and tolerance of themselves and of others.
The three days will revolve around 3 different topics; being the following:

Racism based on ethnicity differences; or “POC” day
LGBTQ+; Gender and Sexuality day
Mental Health awareness day

We hope that by starting the year out with this week, we can keep discussing these topics all year long and help more events which touch these topics recur more and more often. We hope to leave a legacy that is pursued by the community throughout the coming years and hopefully expand it more and more.

Eter: Are You Unique, Individual, Transcendent?

This is the first within-premises event at IE Creativity Center. Produced by IE Campus Life, it is intended to offer the audience a multifaceted hybrid experience as it includes:

- The official opening Eter Exhibition (notions of identity)
- The face-to-face chance to talk to the (he & she) artists
- A very exclusive panel discussion with IE Vice-Chancellor of Ethis, Diversity & inclusion Celia de Anca on The Second Sex.
- A live concert by young gem Valdivia

Hosted by IE Creativity Center, Casa de la Moneda Segovia. In-person event that will also be on streaming vía Campus Life Facebook Page.

In the case of in-person attending, it is ESSENTIAL to specify if you are willing to attend the panel, see the concert or both because of COV-19 protocols. Hosted by the same room, different time.

Reserve your spot by:

- Getting one ticket of each event (see below)
- Sending us an email to confirm & book your spot (very limited capacity)

What is ETER?

Popular culture argues Ether to be an invisible fluid, an entity filling the whole space and a medium transmitting energy. Until the nineteenth century, eter was thought to be the fifth natural element complementing the other four -air, fire, water, earth-. As a real chemical unit, the ether is stable and reliable, even though the sonority of its etymological origin evokes volatility, myth and even fantasy.

Besides historical contexts, Eter is first and foremost the new exhibition produced by IE Campus Life, and the newest project hosted by IE Creativity Center. Not only that, Eter is this multifunctional event aiming to offer IE Community a unique offline experience on October the 8th 2020.

Thanks to the theme around which the exhibition gravitates (self-awareness, identity and human dualism in the photographic work of two young artists -Carmen Chacón & Carlos Voba-), we have programmed:

- The official chance to visit the exhibition

- A conference on Simone de Beauvoir's The Second Sex

- A panel discussion with Celia de Anca and the two artists moderated

- The Live concert of young talent Valdivia to close the event.

Please note: our premises are ready to guarantee Cov-19 protocols and so the capacity will be strictly limited.

  • Conference & panel discussion
  • Live concert of Valdivia
  • Streming of panel & concert
  • Watch it WITHIN premises

Social Awareness Week: Resetting Homo Sapiens – why we need to reset our species for the 21st century

Have you ever woken up excessively tired despite a long night’s sleep? Or found yourself losing your temper for something trivial? Worse, have you ever picked a fight with someone close on an irrelevant issue, leaving you either angrier or feeling miserable? While light and unpreoccupied one day, either because you had unexpected result on a mid-term exam, or for no reason at all, have you ever suddenly felt inadequate, and started questioning your friendships, your relationships, the decisions you’ve made, and generally your life (and why not the whole universe if you stretch it)? Last but not least, have you ever felt that euphoric moment where you think you are the absolute best at what you do, and at the very top of your own game, with only a happy few worthy of your time?

The underlying reasons for all these thoughts, feelings, emotions and impulses to act may be in the way you have treated yourself in the past few weeks. While our human machine is an incredibly resilient resource that science still has not fully understood – especially the brain – it does have its limits, and its own needs that, for some reason, 20th century education has generally taken for granted, or just expected “others” to take care of.

Social Awareness Week: Express yoursex! How to talk about sex/gender by Prof. Cristina Nualart

Taking examples from everyday life, from activist groups, institutions and individuals, this talk will present some useful tools to be able to talk about gender issues. The aim is to critically analyse situations where gender may be the motive of stereotyping or of discriminatory attitudes. Gender identity is in essence a subjective experience that may seem difficult to identify or name, in oneself and in others. We welcome an open-minded discussion on topics such as the so-called new masculinity, feminisms, LGBTQ+, and transgender.
