In this seminar, we will explore the main implications of this crisis in Health and Education based on gender. Official records indicate that men are at higher risk of dying from COVID-19 than women mainly due to a combination of biological and behavioral factors, however due to their caregiving roles within and outside the household, women are disproportionately more exposed to the virus. In Spain, for instance, among infected health care workers, 71.8 percent are female compared to 28.2 percent male. In Education, in some low-middle income countries existing gender inequalities in the use of digital resources may affect girls during the closure of schools by limiting their capacity to access home-schooling materials. Another effect is that boys may be forced out of schooling to contribute to income generation activities for the household.
Through examples, we will analyze responsive policies that consider COVID-19 gender-related impacts in order to avoid that the gender gaps widen during and after the pandemic.
